JUDGE

Jo’s eyes wandered down my chest and stomach and stopped at my growing erection. She had asked me for space, or I would have pulled her against me to let her feel how she was changing me. Let my body speak for me where languages failed me.

Please, Hēla, let her see how badly I wanted her. Let her know that I would protect her with this body. This body had been a weapon, a punishment, a whipping post, but never a lover. And I thought that this body could be a lover for her. Was I considering love? Just the thought of love made my jaw and chest tighten. How could I love if I had not yet experienced it? What if I failed love too? I could learn, couldn’t I? The tiny spark of hope was too much.

Jo shook herself quickly, shaking off whatever thoughts invaded her mind, and busied herself with wetting a wash rag. She began wiping the dried blood from her face and to my surprise, the bruising and swelling was rapidly healing.

Jo did not heal as fast as I did, but this was faster than a mere human. Like Hooch, Jo must have access to more supernatural gifts than her singing had alluded to. Was she also a suppressed realmweaver? Was she like me?

Forcing my muscles to relax, I let my hands fall open at my sides. A lifetime of control tested.

“Get in the shower,” she insisted, the warmth gone from her voice. “Get the blood off you.”

It didn’t feel like a blatant rejection, just a redirection of energy. The Conclave could be on their way to investigate what occurred at Spite. We needed to get cleaned up if we were going to make it back to the gate unbothered, or we’d run the risk of being harassed by alarmed humans. I walked past her, heard her breath catch and stopped. My back. I waited for her to realize what the scars down my back meant. If I could hear it from angels and demons, surely, I could hear it from one human female.

“Judge,” Jo whispered on a long exhale. Of all the things I expected to hear, pain was neither what I feared or wanted.

Jo attempted to speak several times before issuing a sharp rebuke. “Judge, take your fucking socks off.”

Relieved, I did as I was told then stepped into the shower and closed the light pink curtain. Though not my bathing chambers at Hēla, it was similar enough to understand what was being attempted in this small bathroom. A cramped space not fit for one human, let alone someone of my size. I would let the water run over me, scrub off the blood, and then get out. At the level of my abdomen was a single knob. Even the way humans controlled water was ridiculously convoluted.

Turning the knob, icy cold water shot out at me, and I threw myself back into the wall with an undignified yelp. Jo yanked back the curtain, reaching into the icy stream to turn off the water.
